Dual Immersion Program Model

Students in the program will receive about 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in the other world language. In the primary grades, Reading/Language Arts will be taught about half of the day in English while also reinforcing math and content vocabulary. Math, Social Studies, and Science concepts will be taught in the world language while strengthening the literacy skills in that language. art, music, and P.E. will be taught in either language.

In the upper grades (4-6) the division of curriculum will vary slightly. Beginning in grade 4, students will learn literacy skills in both languages. Also, the majority of the math instruction will take place in English with math reinforcement and application occurring in the world language. In grades 4 and 5, Science will be taught in the world language and Social Studies will be taught in English. For grade 6, those two subjects will be reversed; Science will be taught in English and Social Studies in the world language. Again, art, music, and P.E. will be taught in either language.

The elementary dual language immersion program is considered to be a comprehensive educational experience. Beginning in the first grade, paired English and target language teachers collaborate to support student mastery of both the core content standards and target language skills in a full day program. It is our expectation that students who participate in the language immersion experience participate fully in the school academic day and its prescribed instructional design.

At the secondary level, students will enroll in 2 courses in grade 6-9, which are taught entirely in the immersion language. One will be a world language course and the other will be a Social Studies or Health class, depending on the grade level. Students will have the option to take the AP test as a 9th grader. In grades 10-12, upper division university courses will be offered to students who pass the AP exam. They may also have the option to start a 3rd or 4th language.
